The purpose of this study was to investigate the typical charateristics of the college environment in Korea and to determine the environmental variable and how they effect the affective characteristics of students. Under this purpose, the study set forth gorle as follows: 1) to develop a conceptual framework for the environmental characteristics and variables inherent in Korea colleges, 2) to construct tools for outining the relationship between socio-psychological characteristics and affective characteristics, 3) to develop an empirical research model for an analysis of relations among the environmental variables, and 4) to define the relationship between environmental characteristics and affective characteristics.
This study was predicted on the assumption that the socio-psychological environment of colleges will influence student achievement. This assumption directed attention to the predeterminant variables which presumably characterized the college environment and student achievement pattern; those for the socio-psychological environment of colleges were viewed as background variables, those for behavioral achievement as socio-psychological environvent variables and student's achievement affective characteristics. According to the system analysis model, the background variables were viewed as imput, environmental variables as process and affective characteristics as output.
In connection with this study, two tools were developed. One was designed to evaluate the socio psychological environment(College Environment Scale) and the other to identify the affective characteristics (Affective characteristic Test). Both are rating scales. College Environment Scale consists of 15 subscales, while affective characteristis test consists of 9 subscales. There tools were tested with regard to validity and reliability, the reliability of items being d=.49 and above.
Sampled for the study were four-year colleges and universities totalling 45. This represents the number of institutions to which greationnaies were addressed. To investigate the latent constructs of college environment, factor analysis made: to identify difference and correlation, and multiple regression analysis were made respectively.
The finding of this study may be summarized as follow: First, the socio-psychdogical environment of Korean colleges vary significantly according to their background characteristics(P<.05), with the exception of environmental variables. second, background characteristics were found to have noticeable influence on affective characteristics Third, a significant cant relationship was found between background characteristics indiceo and environment and affective characteristics(P<.05). fourth, by and large, environmental variables and affective varriables were significantly correlated.
The fallowing conclusions may be advanced. The socio-psychological environment is observed to hold a varying degree of academic, order, system maintenance, person-environment interaction and ecolagical balance. The background characteristics of college have influence on socio psychological environment.
