영어 초록
The purpose of this study is to promote the level of quality of higher education in Korea inquiring what the inherent nature of the idea of university and what the factors and the principles imbedded in the idea of university are, but also applying them to the establishment of the idea of university and to the administration of higher education in Korea.During the course of this study three enduring idea of university have been pointed out, that is, firstly the quest for truth through academic learning, secondly that of aims at raising the intellectual tone of society by transmission of knowledge, and thirdly that of application of knowledge to the democratic society.
These three idea of university are the fundamental and everlasting ideas that should be pursued by all universities. Especially the idea of the quest for truth takes the position of the very core of the remaining two ideas in developing higher education.
The factors of establishing and developing the idea of university are endurance, adaptation and reason. These three factors have constantly contributed to the development of the idea of university, through interaction among them.
Endurance has a concept of tradition, identity, inherence, preservation and succession as the developing factor for vertical idea of university. This factor makes endurance of the idea of university in the quest for truth by academic learning.
Adaptation has a concept of innovation, progress, creativeness and renewal which is the developing factors for horizontal idea of university. This factor makes development of idea of university through service for the society, applicable to the knowledge for the democratic society.
Reason is the factor that enables the two horizontal and vertical idea of university to converge. This can be called the convergent idea of university, which acts as co-ordinator, cultivator, discriminator and judge through interaction between the two other factors. This factor builds intellectual taste in human society.
In consideration of the present situation of higher education in Korea, the establishment of the idea of university based upon aforementioned factors and principles could be asserted to become a valuable institutional idea to contribute to the realization of the missions of university in Korea.
