장애아동의 출생은 가족이 예상하지 못한 일이며 가족구성원에게 많은 영향을 주게 된다. 장애란 일시적으로 있다가 없어지는 것이 아니라 일생동안 지속되는 결함의 상태이기 때문에 가족들은 높은 스트레스를 경험하게 되며, 예기치 못한 상황에서 가족의 취약성을 보이게 된다. 통계청(2007)에 의하면 발달장애인의 수는 1999년도에는80,019명에서 2007년도에는 142,589명으로 9년 동안 63,000여명 가량이 증가되고 있다. 이러한 추세에 따르면 2009년도의 발달장애인 수는 더욱 증가되었을 것이라는 예측이 가능하다. 발달장애를 가진 가정의 부모는 장애자녀의 특성과 특별한 요구에 의해 영향을 받아(Crnic & Leconte, 1986) 긴장 상태가 계속된다. 뿐만 아니라 장애로 인한 극단적인 반응을 보이는 장애자녀만이 아니

The purpose of this study is to research the improvement and extent of empathy capabilities of mothers who have developmentally disabled children and non-handicapped siblings, and the behavior of the non-handicapped siblings by performing a filial therapy program for the mothers of the developmentally disabled children. In this study, filial therapy was administered on non-handicapped siblings and the mothers of developmentally disabled children to improve their relationship positively. The research subjects consisted of eight members of the experimental group and eight members of the controlled group. The filial therapy program was performed for eight members of the experimental group for one and half hours once a week for eight weeks. After participating in the program, the mothers in the experimental group returned to their homes and performed play therapy along with the non-handicapped siblings. As a result, the empathy capabilities of the mothers in the test group for the non-handicapped siblings improved more than that of the mothers in the control group. In addition, the behavior of the non-handicapped siblings whose mothers belonged to the experimental group also improved. This study is significant to the empathy capabilities of mothers with developmentally disabled children as well as the behavior of the non-handicapped siblings through the filial therapy program.
