I. INTRODUCTION
Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is the process of providing broadcast television services, stored video contents, and data to the TV through the use Internet protocol (IP) networks. These IP systems can be public IP systems (the Internet), private data systems (LAN based), or a hybrid of public and private systems. IPTV is about employing a different transport protocol to deliver content to the television, and not necessarily the Internet which is different from Internet TV.
The biggest engine in growth of IPTV is the increase of data transmission speed due to information superhighway. These days, the speed of the Internet can reach up to 100Mbps through various technologies. This capacity is sufficient to cover not only conventional broadcasting systems but also HD level broadcasting systems of which the bandwidth is around 20Mbps.
Growing demand for local and personalized content has also increased the interests in IPTV. The mass media has gone increasingly national, and it is now difficult for cable or satellite service providers to differentiate their service with the existing system. IPTV has the potential to understand each individual consumer and provide different recommendations accordingly; this is a key concept of personalization.
This report introduces the underlying components and infrastructure enabling IPTV. It also discusses the related technologies of IPTV as well as market analysis into the subscriber base, revenue forecast and market competition. Challenges of IPTV are discussed in terms of both the technology and market deployment.
