In the 1990s, both Aaron Friedberg and John Mearsheimer tried to analyze the multipolar Europe. Interestingly, however, they reached extremely opposite perspectives about the post-Cold War Europe. While Aaron Friedberg argued that European countries are expected to maintain peace and stability, John Mearsheimer argued that the future of Europe is an anarchy and instability rather than peace. Both arguments seem very plausible in terms of their logical analyses and plentiful supporting evidences, but I don’t agree with both assumptions as a person who can actually watch what’s going on in Europe approximately more than a decade after their arguments came out. I believe Europe still has much potential for conflicts not because of its multi-polarity of power distribution, but because of its diversity in ethnics, cultures, interests, and the visions.
