This paper examines the two major female characters of 『A Midsummer Night`s Dream』, Hermia and Titania, in relation to the views of women during the English Renaissance. Focus will be on how the two women are oppressed and how they cope with this oppression, and eventually on how Shakespeare views women and patriarchy.
First of all, in order to study Women`s character in 『A Midsummer Night`s Dream』, It is considered to some factors in England of the Shakespearean age. The Shakespearean age is called as the Renaissance. In this time, the culture centered on God was changed to the culture centered on Human Being. Human Being`s destiny was moved by human power, so they became the subject of their destiny and believed that they should challenge circumstance given for them.
In those times, the newly rising aristocracy who accumulated wealth and the middle class played a leading part in English society influenced the Renaissance.
