This play explores questions about what is Normal and to what extent society will go to normalize people (or to lock them away somewhere if they can`t be normalized). The role of the psychiatrist in this process both challenges and depresses Dr. Dysart, who hates the losses such normalization necessarily requires, and finds himself envying the passionate obsessions of his patient. The play is built wonderfully around symbolic use of masks and staging.
First, the author write about horse for the subject matter of this play inspired by one boy`s crime. But I wondered why Alan cling to a horse so. His repressed will and sexual consciousness are sublimates through a horse at 6 years old of Alan. It is Alan`s psychological motive that he take care of horse at a barn. Because he loves horse like his life. Equus means horse in the Latin language but in the light of this play, Equus maybe means God of Alan or the Absolute and the primitive sex which inherent in instinct but it seems to mean various meanings like a crucial reality. The most impressive scene was also the process from Alan and Jill`s an affair scene at a barn to stabbing his eyes. To Alan, a horse was God like the Absolute. But, when his crouched and hidden instinct realizes to doing, the horses that he has been believed and treated as God turns to an obstacle. That is to say, the horse are God but the harmers of the anguish any more. The situation Alan`s stabbing his eyes is similar to Oedipus`s pricking his eyes. We can analyze that Oedipus` act is because of his actual condition and a desperate situation on the other hand, Alan`s is an resistance against prohibitions and oppressions in despair and a kind of both defiance and disobedience.
