For almost all young girls in America, the pretty little Barbie doll is one of their most prized possessions while growing up. During Christmas, their birthdays, or any other occasions when they are able to receive gifts from their parents, they all strive to collect those little Barbie doll dresses, cooking materials, Barbie car, mansions, and the other things that makes their imagined Barbie doll life much fancier. Like some sort of hierarchy, when one has the most extravagant Barbie collections, you become the leader of the girls’ group. You can let them play with your expensive Barbie house and they watch with envious eyes as they perceive you as the luckiest girl in the world. Also, you become the one who can make the decisions about who gets to play with your fancy Barbie group as well. Ironically, this dream-like Barbie doll world often resonates
with our lives in the real world. We, Americans, are obsessed about looks, name brands, and expensive things that can cover up the ugliness we feel in our minds. Barbie-Q by Sandra Cisneros delves into this concept and illustrates the fact that Americans only accept people by what they have rather than who they are -- ever since we first began to play with the Barbie doll.
