Hepatitis A와 B virus는 개발도상국을 중심으로 세계적으로 넓게 퍼져있으며 질병률과 사망자수에 있어서도 의학적으로 중요하다. 현재 Hepatitis A와 B 모두를 동시에 예방할 수 있는 백신을 사용할 수 있게 되었다(TwinrixTM, SmithKline, Beecham Biologicals). 이에 따라 combined vaccine의 immunogenicity를 simultaneous 또는 single immunization과 비교 실험해 보았다. 그리고 또한 combined vaccine의 schedules(0, 6 months or 0, 12months dose)에 따라 combined vaccine의 면역성이 어떻게 변화하는지 비교 실험해 보았다(원래는 3 dose schdules). 따라서 2개의 그룹으로 나누어서 실험되었는데 첫 번째는 18세에서 30세의 건강한 남녀 300명(평균나이 21.8세)을 대상으로 single immunization과의 비교실험, 두 번째는 12세에서 15세의 건강한 남녀 208명을 대상으로 vaccine의 schedules에 다른 비교실험이다. combined vaccine은 첫번째 18-30세 실험에서 hepatitis B에 대해 99.5%의 항체생성률을, hepatitis A에 대해 100%의 항체생성률을 보였다. 또한 12-15세의 실험에서 0, 6 months dose에서는 hepatitis B에 대해 98.1%의 항체생성률을, hepatitis A에 대해 100%의 항체생성률을 보였다. 그리고 0. 12 months dose에서는 hepatitis B에 대해 97%의 항체생성률을, hepatitis A에 대해 99%의 항체생성률을 보였다. combined vaccine 사용에 따른 부작용 역시 기존의 백신과 크게 다르지 않는 것으로 실험결과 나타났다. 따라서 hepatitis A 와 hepatitis B virus에 대한 combined vaccine은 기존의 single백신에 버금가는 높은 면역성을 가지고 굉장히 안정적으로 사용할 수 있는 백신이라 할 수 있으며 경제성도 매우 높아서 앞으로 많이 사용되어질 것으로 기대되어진다.
