Jane’s defiant attitude and initiative spirit in <Jane Eyre> created a sensation when this novel was published. People have regarded Jane’s character as an incarnation of not refined indignation, also a revolutionary character, which challenges contemporary view of womanhood and sometimes a material for effective discussion of feminism. Like this, Jane’s unique character is conspicuous because it is against contemporary view of womanhood. Charlotte Bronte depicted the process of Jane’s characterization faithfully. That is to say, Bronte threw out steps be formed Jane’s character and contributed inevitability to this novel’s plot. Therefore, Jane’s character is motive power leading <Jane Eyre> and it is one of the most outstanding points of this novel. I will demonstrate the originalities and limitations of Jane’s character through carefully searching the process of Jane’s characterization.
