A diode lets the current flow only in one direction due to its physical nature. We call the diode is biased in forward if it is conductive and otherwise biased in reverse direction. In the case of being biased reversely, the current does not flow, and the diode works in effect as an open component. Unless the current reaches the threshold; that is, until it reaches the reverse breakdown voltage, which is the point where the current starts flowing through.
This character defines a direction within circuits comprising of diode and therefore can modify an input signal appropriately, e.g., rectifying AC input signal to have a certain polarity or limiting the range (clamping) of an input signal. In the following experiments, we have observed the features of a half-wave rectifier as well as a full-wave bridge rectifier. Also, we have observed features of clamped signals of both a diode and a Zener diode and compared their differences.
