Though simple in concept, circuits comprising of passive components show various useful characteristics. For example, an impedance of a capacitor decreases as frequency increases, whilst that of an inductor increases. Thus, different connecting configurations give different outcomes. In order to construct further advanced circuits there needs a comprehension on basic circuits. In the following series of experiments, we observed well known circuits such as RC high pass and low pass filters, bandpass filters, notch filters and series RLC circuit. Also, as optional assignments, we further examined features regarding measurement tools; the frequency dependence of carbon resistors and the speed of signal traveling through a BNC cable.
A. RC High Pass Filter and Low Pass Filter
RC circuit can act as a high or a low pass filter. When a resistor is connected with a capacitor in series, voltage across the resistor attenuates at frequencies lower than the 3dB cutoff frequency of 1/2πRC.
