1.1 실험 목적
본 실험은 두 가지 polymerization method(Prepolymer method, One-shot method)를 통해 Polyurethane의 polymerization을 진행하고,, 이들 각각의 final product를 핵 자기 공명 분석(NMR, Nuclear Magnetic Reasonance Spectroscopy), 적외선 분광법(IR, Infrared Spectroscopy), 인장 시험(Tensile Test)을 통해 polymer의 structural characteristic과 mechanical property를 비교하여 보기 위함이다. 이를 통해 각 method로부터 도출되는 polyurethane의 적합한 사용처를 유추해볼 수 있기를 기대한다.
1.2 Theoretical background
실험을 진행하기 앞서 실험의 final product인 Polyurethane과 실험에서 사용할 두 method에 대해 알아볼 필요가 있다.
1.2.1 Polyurethane의 History & Use
폴리우레탄은 1937년 독일 I.G Farben 사의 Otto Bayer이 폴리우레탄의 화학적 구조를 착안하고 hexamethylene diisocyanate와 butanediol을 반응시켜 Nylon 6,6와 유사한 구조의 폴리우레탄을 합성하였다. 당시는 미국의 DuPont 사의 Carother가 condensation polymerization을 통해 Nylon을 개발하여 세계적인 붐을 일으키고 있던 시기(1935년)로, 전략적인 차원에서 새로운 고무를 만드려는 시도 끝에 이를 성공하였다.
폴리우레탄은 화학과 물리학의 발전과 더불어 경질 폼, 연질 폼, 필름, 연질과 경질의 탄성체(elastomer), 섬유 등과 같은 매우 다양한 물리적 성질들의 상품을 가능하게 하고 있으며, 플라스틱 시장에서도 PE, PVC, PP, PS 등과 함께 거대한 소비 시장을 가진 범용 제품이 되었다.
