엘리 프레이저(Eli Pariser) TED 강연 https://www.ted.com/talks/eli_pariser_beware_online_filter_bubbles?language=ko, TED 강연 은 엘리 프레이저의 저서 ‘생각 조종자들’(원제 : The Filter Bubble)에서 파생되었다.의 ‘필터버블(Filter bubble)’과 ‘반향실 효과(Echo chamber)’는 최근 미디어 환경을 대표하는 개념이다. 인터넷과 SNS의 발달로 이용자들의 정보 선택의 폭이 증가(H Lee & KS Hahn, 2018)했음에도 불구하고, SNS의 이용자 맞춤형 서비스에 의해 이용자가 원하는 내용으로만 필터링 된 정보를 접하게 되어 필터버블에 갇히는 현상은 결국에는 한쪽 의견으로 치우친 양극화(Polarization)를 초래하기 때문에 많은 학자들의 우려를 사고 있다(Pariser, 2011; Sunstein, 2017; Michael A, Myiah J & Jay D, 2018). 물론 선택적 노출(Selective Exposure)은 SNS의 추천 알고리즘에 의한 타의적 노출 때문만은 아니다. 페스팅거(Festinger, 1957)의 인지 부조화(Cognitive dissonance)에 따르면 미디어 이용자들은 자신들의 인지 부조화 상태를 줄이기 위해 선택적 노출을 할 수도 있기 때문에(Stroud, 2014), 정보의 홍수를 이루는 온라인 환경 속에서 개인이 자신의 인지 부조화 상태를 해소하기 위해 선택적 노출이 이루어지기도 한다. 더불어 그간 많은 학자들이 인터넷 매개 커뮤니케이션이 초래할 수 있는 선택적 노출의 결과의 한 유형으로 양극화의 한 유형인 ‘집단 극화(Group polarization)’에 주목해온 것을 보면(노정규‧민영, 2012), 선택적 노출과 양극화는 디지털 매체 환경을 설명하기에 적합한 개념이라 생각한다.
