Pascal wrote his idea about faith of God in his book, Pensée. He argued that we should believe in God because it is more rational choice, whether God exists or not. This idea is quite unique as he assumed that we could not know the existence of God. It seems like innovative and logical idea, but it has many flaws. This essay will point out the problems of Pascal’s argument.
Pascal starts his argument by using the ‘infinity’. We know the existence and nature of finite. On the contrary, the only thing we know about the infinite is its existence. He applied same logic to human and god. Human is finite and we can figure out our existence and nature. However, god is similar to infinite. He claimed “But we know neither the existence nor the nature of God, because he has neither extension nor limits.” We do not know God’s nature. In addition, we do not know its existence. We only know that ‘God is infinite.’
