Gas Absorption
2. Objective
The objective is to characterize the performance of a packed-bed absorption column, and to understand the principle of gas absorption. In addition, we can calculate the overall mass transfer coefficient, number of transfer unit and height of transfer unit.
3. Theory
A. Gas absorption
In gas absorption a soluble vapor is absorbed from its mixture with an inert gas by means of a liquid in which the solute gas is more or less soluble. The washing of ammonia from a mixture of air and ammonia by means of liquid water is a typical example. A major applications of absorption technology is the removal of CO2 from natural gas or synthesis gas by absorption in solutions of ammines or alkaline salts. The solute is subsequently recovered from the liquid by distillation, and the absorbing liquid can be either discarded or reused.
C. Two-film theory (gas-liquid case)
In the two-film theory, it is assumed that the head phase is in equilibrium at the interface of the phase where the head phase is in contact, and there is no mass transfer resistance at the interface.
