1. Title: Distillation Column
2. Objective
The distillation column is probably most significant separation processing unit in the chemical industry. Perhaps, 90% of commodity chemicals are separated by this unit, and it consumes significant energy caused by extensive use of heating.
3. Theory
A. Vapor pressure
Vapor pressure is defined as the pressure exerted by a vapor in thermodynamic equilibrium with the condensed phases (solid or liquid) at a given temperature in a closed system. The equilibrium vapor pressure is an indication of the evaporation rate of the liquid. And it also relates to the tendency of particles to escape from the liquid or a solid.
B. Volatility
A substance with a high vapor pressure at normal temperatures is often referred to as volatile. In other words, the boiling point of a liquid is a measure of its volatility.
C. Distillation
Distillation is the process that occurs when a liquid sample is volatilized to produce a vapor that is subsequently condensed to a liquid richer in the more volatile components of the original sample.
