Appreciate the settling phenomenon of round-shape solid objects caused by gravity.
Understand the concept of fluid viscosity and its effects on the sedimentation of objects.
Determine the values of drag coefficient CD and Reynolds number as well as understand the relationship between these dimensionless parameters.
Examine the Stokes’ law: its limitation and application.
2. Theory
Sedimentation is the settling of a particle, or suspension of particles, in a fluid due to the effect of an external force such as gravity, centrifugal force, or any other body force. Settling is the process by which particulate settles to the bottom of a liquid and form sediment. Particles that experience a force, either due to gravity or due to centrifugal motion will tend to move in a uniform manner in the direction exerted by that force.
