본문내용
“Evolution selects for those individuals most effective at producing babies and at helping them spread to suitable places to live.” Microbes thus evolve diverse ways to better spread from one person to another and from animals to people.
Microbes have evolved to take different strategies to spread their offspring. Some microbes passively sit and wait for the host to be eaten by the new host. For example, salmonella patiently waits for the next host to eat meat until eight weeks after the pig dies. Other microbes such as malaria, plague, and typhoid use biting insects as a means of transportation between animals and humans. More active germs induce changes in the host's body and behavior, seeking to spread. The flu spreads into the air by causing coughing and sneezing, while cholera causes diarrhea and spreads to water resources. Furthermore, rabies drives infected dogs crazy, causing them to bite and invade into wounds through salvia.
