본문내용
The folktale is about 'Heike Monogatari' in the book The Tales of Heike (McCullough, 1991). This is about the fight for power between the Tiara clan and the Genji. The Tales of Heike is a story told for many years running seven centuries. It has been put across in much folklore which has been passed across many generations. More than seven centuries ago, at Dan-no-ura, the last battle between the Heike (Taira clan) and the Genji (Minamoto clan) was fought. The Heike perished together with their young emperor Antoku Tenno and his mother who commit suicide by drowning. These particulars are tales of tragic deaths (such as the Dan-no-Ura). The Biwahoshi's retelling was believed to quite the restless dead, this is further exemplified in 'The Story of Mimi-nashi Hoichi' who is tricked into pacifying the restless dead due to his skill as a Biwahoshi.
The story of the Heike Monogatari was made by compiling a collection of folk tales composed and recited by traveling monks, among them Hoichi, who chanted them with the Biwa.
