Films, especially Hollywood films reflect the gender imbalance. The feeling of pleasure and action to watch is structured and formed to satisfy males’ need. Every action and fantasies are based on men’s desire rather than women’s. For the result, in the film, women are the subject for violence that is held by man or to be redeemed. They are described either as a sexually pure or hypersexual, a tragic victim or a dangerous violator . Laura Mulvey criticizes the dominant gender binary in films. The criticism of gender imbalance is the starting point for feminist theory . While the ideology of major films intensifies the gender imbalance, Mulvey looks for the alternative films that challenge gender imbalance and depute for voyeurism and desire of man.
Jane Campion’s film, The Piano is one of the films that was mostly reviewed from the feminist perspective. The noticeable part is that the director of the film is a woman, since there aren’t many female directors, and only a few of them is successful for making great films, Jane Campion is extraordinary in some ways.
