본문내용
In his life William Blake challenged the philosophical conventions and Christian values of his time by refusing to use cliché, dichotomic terms – most notably angel and devil – but when it comes to gender dynamics he mainly remained misogynistic like other contemporary writers of his era, though in a more subtle and diluted sense. Despite the title of the book being “The Book of Thel” - a biblical reference which suggests that the poem is supposed to take a form of narrative, supposedly by Thel herself – the poem depicts Thel’s voice as something gentle and insignificant, much like women’s dismissive position during Blake’s era. Thel’s depiction in the poem reflects the female-chaste of the time as well, as her lack of will to confront the seemingly fallen realm of experience reflects the passive female stereotype.
