Description of the sonnet
Sonnet 9 consists of a typical Shakespearean sonnet form. The speaker is Shakespeare giving advice to a younger poet to marry someone, have children so that he wouldn’t have to worry about the widow after his death because the widow can console herself by looking at the children and reminisce the younger poet. However warns him of the negative effect if he doesn’t do so. The sonnet is composed of iambic pentameters however there are few lines where they are anapestic such as in lines ten and twelve. The sonnet has fourteen lines, each line is divided into five syllables and its rhyme scheme is ab-ab-cd-cd-ef-ef-gg alike to the other 153 Shakespearean sonnets.
Paraphrase
Is it for fear to wet a widow's eye
Is it for fear to wet a widow’s eye?
That thou consumest thyself in single life?
Is this how you want to consume your life single?
Ah! if thou issueless shalt hap to die.
Ah! If you shall die childless
