Predestination has been one of the problematic doctrines in the history of Christian theology. As it is tersely defined by some theologians, it is “the sovereign determination and foreknowledge of God.” Although this doctrine has its origin from Eph. 1:4-5, because of its various and ambiguous interpretations or applications, it has become a controversial subject. At the very beginning of the Early Church, the doctrine of predestination was clearly postulated by the Apostle Paul. However, throughout the Medieval Church, God’s sovereignty had been threatened by the authority of the Church which depended upon the Pope. In other words, God’s sovereign and eternal grace was replaced by institutional power and man’s will. This historical and theological trend gave birth to a generalization of the doctrine of predestination supported mainly by the Reformers such as Martin Luther and John Calvin. They tried to recover the God’s sovereign determination with regard to salvation from the corrupted Roman Catholic Church. If Luther emphasized God’s grace, Calvin did God’s sovereignty.참고 자료
