Topic Selection Steps“예술은 감성이다. 설명이 필요한 예술은 더 이상 예술이 아니다.”모든 작품 속에서 일관되게 행복감에 대해 이야기하는 르누아르에게 남다른 애정을 가지고 있다. 예술경영CEO라는 막연한 꿈으로 고교시절을 보냈었다. 예술 분야에 종사하고 싶으면서도 창작에 대한 두려움이 많았기 때문이다. 꿈 이야기를 하면 어른들께서는 언제나 좋아하는 예술가 한 사람을 물으셨다. 발명가를 꿈꾸는 아이에게 존경하는 과학자를 물어보듯이 나에게 물으실 때 나는 르누아르를 말했었다.
르누아르와 같은 사람이 되고 싶다는 생각보다는 르누아르라는 사람의 매력에 끌려서 그를 택했던 것 같다. 지금만큼 르누아르와 그의 삶에 대해 이해하고 있었던 것은 아니지만, 그의 작품관에 공감한다. 아무것도 가진 것 없이 시작해서, 류마티스 질병까지 감당하며 평생을 지독히 비루하게 살았던 르누아르인데도 그의 작품에서는 그러한 삶이 투영되지 않는다. 오히려 아주 밝고 강렬하며 아름답다는 느낌에 압도당한다.
누구나 인생의 겨울이 있다지만, 객관적으로 르누아르는 평생을 겨울 속에 살았다. 하지만 그의 작품에는 항상 봄바람이 일고 있다. 그가 작품 속에 자신의 아픔과 상처를 드러내 투영시키지 않고 작품만큼은 진정 아름다운 예술로서 둔 사람이라는 점에서 그를 동경한다. 예술가로서의 허세라곤 전혀 없이 낮아진 자세로 자신이 하는 예술을 예술답다고 말할 수 있는 르누아르의 겸손과 지조는 놀랍기 때문이다.
꿈을 가졌던 여고생 때에, 나는 그 겸손과 지조, 예술에 대한 사랑을 보면서 르누아르를 롤모델로 이야기했던 것이다. 그의 작품들이 주는 느낌과 분위기, 머릿속에서 지워지지 않는 그의 예술에 대한 정의 한마디가 현재를 포함한 일생동안‘르누아르'라는 말이 들릴 때마다 뜨끔하게 만들 것임을 그때는 몰랐다.
이와 같은 이유로 그의 작품들만을 쫓아 온라인 박물관 탐방을 하게 되었고, 그가 여체를 다룬 작품들, 특히 여성 누드를 주제로 한 작품들을 통찰하는‘르누아르의 여인들’을 첫 주제로 선정했었다. 그런데 조사하던 중 뮤즈들을 향한 르누아르의 관점에 대해 부정적인 견해들을 꽤 접하게 되었다.
