Ad watch is a term of analyzing and describing advertising content, including visual and verbal content. The ultimate purpose of the ad watch is to evaluate the veracity, particularly in political advertising, by comparing its content with existing public records and examining the rhetoric. This paper analyzes political advertising that is known to the public as "Daisy Girl" made in 1964 for an American presidential candidate, Lyndon B. Johnson.
1) Some descriptions of the ad itself.
Televised political advertising played an important role in presidential elections since 1952, but the “Daisy Girl” ad had a substantial impact on changing the advertising tactics of American presidential candidates (Chanslor, 2008). The "Daisy Girl" TV ad aired as part of Democrat Lyndon Johnson's campaign against Republican Barry Goldwater. The opening of the 60-second advertisement starts with a 3-year-old girl wearing a simple dress and counting as she picks petals off of a daisy.
