Energy conservation in angular motion
(1). Purpose
In this experiment, you will use a hanging mass to exert a constant torque on a spinning disk, and determine whether the energy gained by the rotating disk is equal to the energy lost by the hanging mass.

⑴ Equipment needed

⑵ Setup
① Set up the equipment as shown in Figure 1.1 on handout. Use the steel disk as the top disk, and use the small torque pulley.
② Attach the mass hanger to the end of the thread. With the thread extended, the mass should almost reach the floor.
③ Adjust the pressure of the compressed air to approximately 9 psi.
④ Check that the bottom disk sits firmly on the base plate.
⑶ Process
① You will need to measure the moment of inertia of the rotating disk(I), and the mass of the hanging mass(m).
