Online slander has also been connected to much more serious incidents. When actress Jin-Sil Choi was found dead in her Seoul home in 2008, there was a public demand for answers. What had driven this beloved star to suicide? Police, media, and Parliament all blamed the Internet. Malicious rumors that had been spreading about the actress, they suggested, prompted her to kill herself. The truth of the tragedy might never be known.
Sadly, this was not an isolated incident. At least six other celebrities have committed suicide since 2005. Many people claim that online slander is at least partially responsible. It may be no coincidence that the country with the most Internet connectivity in the world is also the country with the highest suicide rate.
