abstract
The purpose of this study was to see if computer-mediated communication (CMC) based intercultural exchange can help develop socioclinguistic competence in second language learners. Non-native French speakers interacted with native French speakers in Quebec over on university semester. The study used a qualitative approach to analyze and collect the data. The data included transcripts of discussions from chats and message boards. The common European framework reference for languages was used to provide a description of the elements of sociolinguistic competence. The findings of this study suggest that omputer-mediated communication based intercultural exchange can be a valuable alternative to face-to-face interactions to develope socioclinguistic competence, especially for second language learners who do not have many oportunites to immerse themsleves in the target language environment.
