INTRODUCTION
Patricia Benner는 1934년 버지니아 햄프톤에서 태어났다. 1964년 Pasadena College에서 간호학 학사학위를, 1970년 캘리포니아 주립 샌프란시스코대학에서 내•외과 간호학을 전공하여 간호학 석사학위를 받았다. 1982년 캘리포니아 버클리 대학에서 스트레스, 대처 그리고 건강으로 교육학 박사학위를 취득하였다. 1982년 박사학위 완성까지 샌프란시스코대학의 생리 간호학 부교수로 근무하였으며 2002년에 사회행동과학 분야의 교수로 근무하고 있다.
Benner는 간호학적 사고에 있어서 Virginia Henderson의 영향을 받았다. Henderson(1989)은 간호를 환자나 개인이 죽음에 당면하여 용기 있고 평화로운 죽음에 이르거나 회복하여 건강해지는 과정에서 도와주는 것, 독립된 활동을 수행하도록 개인이 가진 힘, 의지, 지식을 고려하는 것이라고 정의한 학자이다. 또한 간호학적 업적 부분에 있어 버클리대학의 철학교수인 Stuart Dreyfus에게서 현상학에 대한 영향을 받았다. Stuart Dreyfus와 Hubert Dreyfus(1980, 1986)는 기술습득모형을 개발했는데 Benner는 이 이론을1984년 From Novice to Expert에 적용하였다. 그 밖에도 Martin Heidegger의 해석학(hermeneutics), Richard Lazarus의 stress coping theory의 영향을 받았고 돌봄을 형이상학적으로 연구한 Judith Wrubel과는 12년이 넘게 저작과 연구를 함께 했다.
Benner의 주요 저서와 그 내용은 다음과 같다.
 1984년 "From Novice to Expert: Excellence and Power in Clinical Nursing Practice", 『초보자에서 전문가로: 임상 간호실무에서의 우수성과 힘』
간호 실무능력을 Dreyfus 모델에 적용하여 경험에 기초한 각 단계를 발달시킬 것을 제안하였으며, 해석학적 접근을 통해 7개영역, 31개 능력을 도출하였다.
