I believe that the most important theme of this play, 「M. Butterfly」 is orientalism. Orientalism is a complicated word, meaning a dichotomous mind set of Westerners towards Asians in terms of race and sex. It reflects imperialistic thoughts of Westerners that they are superior to Asians so it is fair for Asians to be dominated and educated by the Westerners. To be specific, as shown from lines of Song in the play page 194, from the perspective of orientalism, the West is regarded as rational, progressive, active, and masculine whereas the East is considered as unscientific, irrational, mystic, and feminine. However, the most important point is that the Asians also internalize this mind set while taking advantage from it rather than feel shameful about it or try to escape from its obsession. Because both the Asians and Westerners have admitted and utilized it for their own advantage, this strong mind set has been embedded in us deep in mind.
