본문내용
This drama satirizes victorian society effectively using paradox. In Victorian Age puritanism was so pervaded that people lived according to strict moral and religious principle, especially they disapproved of physical pleasures. After the industrial revolution, money was regarded as very useful thing and a person was judged by his property, social power and class. But Oscar Wilde thoroughly denied those socially accepted ideas. He well known as an aesthete objected to materialism derived from industrialization and he took a poor view of society which forced a person to conform to custom. He had said life imitates art far more than art imitates Life. Seeing that, we can know he wanted to realize meaning of life through art. Presenting unrealistic and sensitive characters as Algernon, Jack, Gwendolen and Cecily, Wilde resisted hypocritical society and pursued pleasure and beauty.
