1. basic features of prokaryotic cell (specifically about their cell walls)
2. gram staining
3. gram positive & gram negative cell
4. definition of peptidoglycan
5. structure of peptidoglycan
6. penicillin and lysozyme
Almost all of prokaryotic cell is surrounded by firm cell wall. Cell wall helps maintain cell's shape, and protect interior cytoplasm and cell membrane from exterior impulse like osmosis.
Chemically, almost all of cell's cell wall is made of high polymer called 'peptidoglycan'. Peptidoglycan is made of 2 parts. One, peptide part that consists of amino acids. The other, the glycan part that consists of carbohydrates.
2.gram staining
Gram staining (or Gram's method) is a method of differentiating bacterial species into two large groups (Gram-positive and Gram-negative). The name comes from its inventor, Hans Christian Gram.

4.definition of peptidoglycan
Peptidoglycan, also known as murein, is a polymer consisting of sugars and amino acids that forms a mesh-like layer outside the plasma membrane of bacteria (but not Archaea), forming the cell wall. The sugar component consists of alternating residues of β-(1,4) linked N-acetylglucosamine and N-acetylmuramic acid. Attached to the N-acetylmuramic acid is a peptide chain of three to five amino acids. The peptide chain can be cross-linked to the peptide chain of another strand forming the 3D mesh-like layer. This 3D stucture is differ in each catecory of bacteria.
