FAIR flower, that dost so comely grow,
Hid in this silent, dull retreat,
Untouched thy honied blossoms blow,
Unseen thy little branches greet:
No roving foot shall crush thee here,
No busy hand provoke a tear.
By Nature’s self in white arrayed,
She bade thee shun the vulgar eye,
And planted here the guardian shade,
And sent soft waters murmuring by;
Thus quietly thy summer goes,
Thy days declining to repose.

인디언 묘지
학식 있는 사람들이 말한 모든 것에도 불구하고
나는 아직도 나의 오래된 의견을 주장한다
죽은 사람을 눕히는 것은
그의 영혼이 영원히 자는 것을 뜻한다
이 땅에 오래 살았던 인디언들은 그리 생각하지 않았다
인디언들은 죽었을 때
다시 친구들과 함께 앉아서
유쾌한 잔치를 즐긴다.
그들이 조각한 새들, 색을 입힌 그릇,
여행을 떠날 때 만든 사슴고기가
영혼의 본질을 이야기 해주고 있다

쏘기 위해 휘어놓은 활
돌 촉이 달린 화살은
삶이 모두 (소진)지나갔음을 이야기 해주는 것뿐
오래된 이상이 사라졌다고 의미하는 것은 아니다
