Abstract
This essay is a review essay for Prof. Jung Kim’s article “The Political Logic of Economic Crisis in South Korea” through criticizing as well as complementing. The importance of this paper is to indentify the causal mechanisms for the 1997 economic crisis in South Korea in terms of political view and thereby to find proper solutions as to prevent other crises.
The Eyes of Foreign Investors
Financial crisis was caused by a huge amount of withdrawals of foreign investors who sought profit and avoided loss. If so, in this essay, it is important to identify which aspects of Korean politics had them consider staying in Korea was losable. The bridge between foreign investors and politics is composed of political (in)stability and political (in)ability. In this context, Kim’s approach is helpful, but indirect.
Political Instability and Inability of Korea
At the time of the Asian financial crisis(1997), the President Kim Young Sam and his ruling party faced economic crisis.
