Frank Norris, the author of “The Pit,” illustrates the story mostly by the person’s dialogue. From any dialogue in the text, the author and readers share their ideas. The most interesting part to share thoughts in this story is the conversation between Jadwin and Corthell. In the middle of the story, the Jadwin’s reply from Corthell’s comment influence entire story, especially reflect author’s idea, and it also contains connotation. The quotation is “It’s a rich man’s game. And at that, there’s no fun in it unless you risk more than you can afford to lose. Well, let’s not talk shop. You’re an artist, Mr. Corthell.”
First of all, to know the mood or feeling of this passage is easy. If readers don’t know the previous paragraphs, it is still easy to understand this short passage. Overall, it exhibits the disregard of the one’s opponent. In addition, the disregard become more powerful not just by ignoring one but also by showing superiority to the other. Jadwin says that he is richer than Corthell, so he ignores Corthell because he has superiority in making money by using his wealth.
