그리스의 극장에는 막이 없었다. 이 때문에 무대 배경이나 새로운 scenes로 바뀌기 전에 코러스가 나오게 된다. 처음에 우선 prologue로부터 시작해서, 한 사람이 개요를 알리고 코러스가 나오는 parodos 단계가 이어진다. 이 극에서 코러스는 노래는 물론 춤을 추며, 사건의 해설자로서, 그리고 사건을 보는 일반 시민들의 의견을 대변하는 역할도 한다. stasimon이라는 부분은 극중 주인공과 코러스와의 대화가 이루어지는 부분이다. 이 극에서 에피소드 뒤에 나오는 코러스는 전 장면을 반영하며, 소포클레스가 관중이 느끼기를 바라는 혼란 상태 놓여있다. 또한 여기에서 코러스는 오이디푸스가 과거에 테베시를 구해낸 후로 그가 잘못임이 판명될 때까지 그들은 계속 충성을 다할 것이라고 선언한다. 코러스는 오이디푸스의 화를 달래도록 설득하기도 한다. 또한 왕으로서, 인간으로서의 오이디푸스의 오만함 등과 관객들에게 여전히 인간의 한계와 신의 위대함을 보여줌으로써 경각심을 불러일으키고 있다. 마지막에서 코러스는 인간의 삶의 한계와 동시에 관객들에게 경고와 동시에 교훈을 준다.
