Wong Kar-Wai's Ashes of Time (東邪西毒) is a film adaptation based on The Brave Archer, a martial arts novel by Jin Yong. In his film adaptation, Wong creates new characters, changes the plot of the story, and reinterprets the novel. The chivalrous fighters in the film are portrayed as symbols of pluralistic masculinity. Cornell’s models of hegemonic masculinity, collusive masculinity, subordinate masculinity, and peripheral masculinity can be found in the chivalrous fighters in Ashes of Time. When the characters are analyzed through pluralistic masculinity, it becomes possible to understand them as characters suffering from betrayal and obsession with love, rather than as heroes. In the film, the chivalrous spirit from Jin Yong's novel is combined with Buddhist ideals. Through martial arts, the film depicts the obsession and pain that men and women have for love and teaches the Buddhist concept of ‘letting go’. Additionally, through the expression of time, Wong expresses the Buddhist concept of reincarnation. His film connects the repetition of seasons and the cycle of time with the fate of characters and the order in which they appear. By doing so, the film shows the fate of humans trapped in time and space while showing the fate of the characters through the almanac and the yin and yang hexagram. Ashes of Time deals with themes of memory and oblivion through martial arts stories. These themes contain the anxious sentiments of people in Hong Kong towards Hong Kong’s return to China. Wong talks about philosophy and religion through martial arts films. In this way, his film Ashes of Time dismantles and reconstructs the Hong Kong martial arts genre and marks the advent of humanistic martial arts films in Hong Kong.
