This investigation will explore the relationship between the price of cigarettes and the number of smokers. The focus of this investigation will be on comparing the number of smokers in the UK and South Korea, when a high level of taxation is imposed on cigarettes. This is because South Korea generally has more smokers (%) than the UK. The topic is an important issue because not only smoking can harm the smokers’ health, but also, it can affect non-smokers around smokers. For example, second-hand smoke causes more than 890,000 premature deaths per year. (Organization, 2017) By carrying out this investigation, I want to predict how the price of cigarettes affect the number of smokers in the future. Furthermore, I am personally engaged with this topic because some of my close family members are smokers. For instance, my grandfather was a smoker and he passed away due to lung cancer. My father is also a smoker and he recently suffered from pneumonia.
