2011년 3월의 반란 이후 시리아는 국가붕괴의 위기에 처해있다. 시리아는 정치적․지리적 독
립 국가로서 시리안 아랍문화와 민족성을 계승해 온 국민국가이었지만 3월반란 이후 시리아
국민들은 당파로 분열되었으며 자신들의 당파에 자율권을 주려는 노력은 당파들 간의 무력충
돌을 일으키고 있다. 본고에서는 이 당파들 중에서 시리아의 북동쪽에 거주하고 있는 정교회
기독교인들(Sūryāyē/Sūryān)을 연구 대상으로 하여 이들이 자신들의 종교적 정체성을 고수하기
위하여 민족적 정체성을 어떻게 발전시켰는지 그리고 여러 당파들을 시리아 국가의 정치적 공
동체로 통합시키기 위하여 어떤 시도를 하였는지에 대해 논의해 보고자 한다. 이슬람 과격파
들이 비 이슬람교도 주민들을 제거하려는 상황에서 시리아 정교회 교회신자는 시리아 안에서
는 그들의 종교적 정체성을 더 이상 고수할 수 없다. 따라서 시리아 정교회 교인들은 그들의
문화적 자산을 통해 민족적 정체성을 재검토 받아야 하며 시리아인으로서의 그들의 정체성에
대한 승인을 요구해야 하는 것이다.

영어 초록

Since the Syrian uprising started in March 2011, the very existence of the Syrian nation-state, in
which political and geographical entities coincide with cultural and ethnic (Syrian-Arabs) ones, has
been threatened. Ordinary Syrians are divided into different factions, and their efforts to empower
themselves have invited violent armed clashes between the different groups in the society. This
article presents the case of the Syriac Orthodox Christians (Sūryāyē/Sūryān) in north-eastern Syria,
who compose one of the factions in Syrian society. This article examines how they develop their
Assyrian ethnic identity in order to maintain their distinctive sectarian identity and at the same
time, to merge their group into the Syrian political community. In the situation that radical Islamists
attempt to eliminate the non-Muslim inhabitants, the Syriac Orthodox Christians no longer can rely
on their former identity as one of the indigenous religious groups in Syria, which used to guarantee
the political rights of their community under the regime of the President Bashar al-‘Assad. The
Syriac Orthodox Christians are obliged to re-examine their identity by referring to their cultural
repertories and claim the authenticity of their indigenous origin as one of the ethnic groups of
Syria.
