measuring participants’ own subjective attitudes. The Q set was 33 items, and the P set was 32 female
middle school students in Seoul and Incheon. After the Q sorting and interviews, the female adolescents’
perception of popularity was categorized. The collected data were analyzed by PC-Quanl Program, and two
different types were presented. Type 1 was ‘sociable leader’ who had the positive personality traits like
laughing a lot, being a good listener, and being considerate and was considered to be a desirable leader
leading peers and classes to more positive ways. Type 2 was ‘cliquish leader’ who had the eye-catching
appearance such as pretty look, make-up and a good sense of style and was popular among male
adolescents. Those girls were perceived as unruly students by adults and some peers, due to caring for
their looks, breaking school rules, and romantic relationship problems, while considering to be a role model
for their fancy looks, their own personalities, popularity among boys. The significance of the research was
that the study reflected adolescents’ views on popularity, extended the types of perceived popularity which
the previous research had conducted, and identified concrete features of the types.
