The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a reading buddy program pairing4-year-old children with forth grade students in an elementary school on young
children's vocabulary and reading attitude change. A total of 24 four-year-old children
in D city in A public kindergarten and the same number of same-aged children in nearby
B public kindergarten were selected for the experimental and control group respectively.
The reading buddy program in the experimental group was implemented during 10
weeks, twice a week, for a total of 20 times. To measure their vocabulary level, the
Receptive Expressive Vocabulary Test(REVT) developed by Kim, Hong, Kim, Jang, and
Lee(2009) was used. The reading attitude was measured by Chae's(1995) test which
modified Saracho's Reading Attitude Test(1988). The reliability of the reading attitude
test, mean and standard deviation of pre- and post-test scores were analyzed using the
statistical software program, SPSS 21.0. To analyze the program effects on the
vocabulary and reading attitude change, t-tests were conducted for difference scores
between pre- and post-tests. The results were as follows. First, the difference scores
of total vocabulary and its sub-factors, which are receptive and expressive vocabulary,
were significantly higher in the experimental group compared to those of the control
group. Second, the difference score of the reading attitude of young children in the
experimental group was also found to be significantly higher compared to that of the
control group. These results suggest that the reading buddy program for young
children with elementary students is effective in facilitating the development of
vocabulary and reading attitude of young children.
