The purpose of this study was to identify the mediating effects of academic self-efficacy and behavioralself-regulation on the relationship between study time and academic achievement in adolescents. The present
study divided study time into self-study time and private tutoring time to investigate whether their influence on
academic achievement would differ. The academic achievement data of 21,390 middle school students and 29,698
high school students were sampled from National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA), provided by
Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE). The results suggested that academic self-efficacy and
behavioral self-regulation both mediate study time and academic achievement of middle and high school students.
Although self-study time had less direct effect on academic achievement than private tutoring time did, its
indirect effect of mediating academic self-efficacy and self-regulation was significant enough to induce greater total
effects than that of private tutoring time. Lastly, compared to high school students, the academic achievement of
middle school students was more susceptible to academic self-efficacy mediated by study time. The results
propose that self-study time could be more effective than private tutoring time for better academic achievement,
especially for middle school students. This also necessitates the need for improving educational interventions to
enhance cognitive and behavioral aspects in learning such as academic self-efficacy and behavioral self-regulation
relevant to the school grade.
