Considering that while Jajangyulsa in 11th year of Queen Sunduk returned from Tang and went to Odaesan to discover holy trace of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, he arrived at Dutasan and first founded Heukryeondae to become the root of present Samhwasa and that Buddhist ruins were also formed in Samcheok area since Beomil-guksa built Gulsansa in Gangneung during reunification period when Zen Buddhism widely spread on a nation-wide scale afterSo, since introduction of Buddhist culture during the epoch of the three Kingdoms, it was greatly developed as Buddhist thought for country up to the end of Goryeo period and it is estimated Buddhism of temples in Gangwon-do must have much strengthened.
However, it is very difficult to understand overall Buddhist culture because proper investigation has not been made on Buddhist ruins and relics currently dispersed in Gangwon-do.
Thus, this study looked into status of ruined temple mainly in Samcheok-si/ Donghae-si/Taebaek-si through literature search, and reviewed stone work and pieces of roof tiles excavated from remaining sites through site survey.
Total 61 ruined temples were confirmed in Samcheok/Donghae/ Taebaek through literature records and site survey at present. Samcheok has 34 places, Donghae 11 places, and Taebaek 5 places while ruined temples confirmed by the laboratory were Samcheok 4 places, Donghae 3 places, and Taebaek 5 places At the moment, we cannot say ruined temples in Samcheok area have been thoroughly investigated. According to checking of a place estimated or orally transmitted as a temple site, no structure or relics were found in many cases and a lot of locations could not be clearly found due to natural disasters and shape alteration. Ruins bored·excavated through investigation of ruined temples since 1990s were Heungjeonrisaji, Jisansaji, Bonjeoksaji, and etc. Among them, building site, stone wall, and tower site of Heungjeonrisaji were lately discovered through excavation/boring and such Buddhist culture of Unified Silla Period was confirmed as “Guktong” Bipyeon, bronze decorations, steel Chodu. Therefore, it is expected that comparative research with adjacent ruined temples will surely provide precious data to understand Buddhist culture of Gangwon-do if detailed investigation accompanied by a comprehensive maintenance plan is done.
