Abstract

Judaic tradition has shown its exclusive attitude against other religious traditions and ethnic others. Their violent attitudes toward others were demonstrated through many religious and ethnic conflicts not only in the Old Testaments but also in the political history of modern Israel. Our dilemma is simple: how can we recognize the God of the Jewish people as our God since the Jews’ God seems too much ethnic and sometimes violent?(Joshua 10:4)The present paper, which has been presented at the annual meeting of the Old Testament scholars for the promotion of theological dialogue between Mission studies and Biblical studies, tries to set an alternative solution for this dilemma by going back to the first missionary event which is reported in the Gospel of Mark, 5:1-20.
The place where Jesus expels the unclean spirit of the Legion out to the swine is Gerash. Gerash belongs to Decapolis where Alexander the Great’s Greek culture has been dominant. When Jesus met the person, Gerash was a thriving city of the Greek-Roman culture. His meeting with the person was inter-cultural and missionary. When the person was cured, he begged to go with Jesus to the land of the Judaic tradition, i.e., Jerusalem and the region of Judaea. However, Jesus ordered him to go back to his country, i.e., Gerash among the Ten Cities (Decapolis) where the Greek-Roman culture was dominant and thriving. The present paper tried to interpret this Bible passage with a missiological perspective. Jesus shows the new way of mission: Leave Jerusalem and proclaim in the Decapolis! There is no relation between Jerusalem and Decapolis in the new way of Jesus’ mission.
