본 연구는 수도권 소재 4년제 A대학에서 <교육연구방법> 수업을 수강한 20명의 학생들이 수집한 동료학생들과의 면담자료 분석을 통해 학습자의 관점에서 대학생들이 수업에서 경험한 과제표절과 과제표절에 대한 인식을 기술하여 심층적으로 분석해보고자 하였다. 대학수업에서의 과제표절에 관한 대학생들의 인식과 경험을 크게 1) 표절인식, 2) 교수자의 성향, 그리고 3) 과제특성의 세 주제영역(themes)으로 나누어 살펴본 본 결과, 본연구에 참여한 대학생들은 첫째, 모호하고 상대적인 표절인식을 보이며 의도하지 않은 상태에서 자신도 모르게 과제표절을 경험하는 경우가 많았고, 둘째, 과제표절의 원인에 대해학습자의 개인적 특성들보다는 교수자의 성향이나 과제특성과 같은 상황적 요인들을 중심으로 설명하는 경향을 보였다. 셋째, 교수자의 수업진행 방식이나 과제유형 및 평가 등 실제 수업장면에서 과제표절 예방을 위한 변화의 노력은 찾아보기 어려운 것으로 나타났다.마지막으로, 본 연구에 참여한 대학생들이 제시한 의견을 바탕으로 과제표절을 예방하기위해 교수자들이 고려해야 할 지침을 제언하였다.

영어 초록

This study analyzed interview data collected by 20 college students who took EducationalResearch Methodology course during Fall 2011 at a public university in Korea to furtherunderstand student perceptions and experiences related to report plagiarism in college courses. Thestudy results indicate that student plagiarism in college courses is indeed a common practice andthree themes emerged including 1) perceptions of plagiarism; 2) instructor characteristics; and 3)assignment characteristics. Among many influencing factors affecting student plagiarism, theinstructor variable seems to be most important and interesting part of the complex puzzle. Finally,from a student-perspective, the study presents the following guidelines for college instructors: 1)The instructor him/herself should develop a sincere and strong interest in student plagiarism to beable to positively influence student behaviors and prevent student plagiarism; 2) The instructorshould continuously communicate the importance of academic integrity. A lip-service or one-dayevent will never stop student plagiarism; 3) It is important to give course assignments withappropriate difficulty level. Assignments that are too difficult(or easy) can lead students to submitplagiarized work instead of completing them on their own; 4) The best way to prevent studentplagiarism is to give assignments that are difficult to copy; and 5) The instructor should becareful when recycle the topic and format of assignments from previous semesters. If an instructorgives the same assignments every semester, it can send the wrong message to the students. Thestudy argues that the aforementioned guidelines can provide meaningful insights for educators aswell as researchers to better understand the complex phenomenon of student plagiarism andimprove our educational practice to promote academic integrity.
