Self-Esteem is important factor that effects the developmental process of individual, and it is especiallyimportant to University students who are in a transition period between adolescence and adulthood. So this
study examines how features measured in adolescence influence the self-esteem levels of individuals during their
time as University students. In this study “adolescence” was divided between time spent in middle school and
high school, and the subjects were also classified by gender: There are two main research inquiries. First, what
factors during middle school had an effect on the future self-esteem of University students? Second, what factors
during high school had an effect on the future self-esteem of University students? The study is based on data
from ‘Korean Youth Panel Survey(KYPS)’, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS 18.0 was used for
statistical analysis.
The major findings were as follows: for males, the factors measured during middle school that had a
measurable influence on self esteem during University were parent attachment, academic grades, study pressure.
For females, the corresponding factors were career maturity, poverty, parent attachment, academic grades, study
pressure, peer attachment. As for factors measured during high school, for males those influencing later self
esteem levels were traumatic experience, career maturity, parent attachment, academic grades, study pressure, peer
attachment, teacher attachment, community attachment, perception subjective about community risk. For females
during high school the corresponding factors were career maturity, parent attachment, academic grades, study
pressure, peer attachment, perception subjective about community risk.
In line with these results, possible implications of this study are discussed concerning the factors during
adolescence that have an effect on the future self-esteem of University students.
