ABSTRACT

Researchers quite often point out that young North defectors' the biggest difficulty in schooling istheir lower academic achievement. However, there are few studies to explore their study process. To
overcome this problem, this research focuses on their academic learning. I used both the quantitative
and the qualitative methods. A survey and basic learning tests in Korean language and mathematics
were administered to seventy two North Korean students in from fifth to ninth grade and three drop
outs living in Seoul. I also conducted interview and observation for in-depth analysis.
The young N. defectors study for better life. Their attitudes in class are good but not willing to
ask questions or express their opinions. They rely on friends to adapt to schooling including solving
difficult problems. Even though complementary class in school is seen as helpful, their participation
is low. It is because they do not want to be humiliated by peers. Some students do not want it for
relaxing after class. However they are positive in attending complementary class provided by
non-government organization or welfare office. Unlike students, parents claim that school should take
stronger responsibility for their academic improvement. Thus we need to make efforts to connect
schools and non-government organizations for the sake of their academic achievement.
