Spirituality and religiosity inherent in the client system need to be consideredsufficiently in the field of social work practice in order to meet individuals'
spiritual needs and to deal with spiritual issues with social and collectivistic
meanings. To solve individuals' inner psychological problems and social structural
problems arising in the post post-modern era, more client-centered and spiritual
intervention methods are needed. Social workers (i.e. social welfare practitioners)
who aspire to improve their spiritual sensitivity and competence for professional
intervention first need to understand such concepts as spiritual intelligence,
spiritual development, spiritual leadership, and spiritual social capital. In this
article, the author presents an integral-spiritual practice model that can contribute
to a more spiritually sensitive social work practice. This model incorporated
spiritual perspectives of clients and social workers as well as social work values
and ethical principles. In this model, Ken Wilber's four-quadrant analytical frame
of Integral Theory was applied, thus making it easier for social workers to deal
with spiritual issues in an integral manner while engaged in micro or macro social
work practice. In the latter part of this article, the author showed some examples
of micro and macro issues related to spirituality that may be found in the
domains of social work practice. In the future, empirical studies need to be
conducted to examine the effectiveness of this practice model in improving social
workers' spiritual sensitivity and spiritual competence for providing ethically sound
professional services.
