The Peninsular War(1808~1813) ended with the final defeat of French army. The guerrilla who opposed the Napoleonic conquest of Spain have occupied a central role in the historiography of the Peninsular War. But the traditional view of the guerilla is very different one country from another. In England and France, the historical literature has always focused on Wellington and Napoleon, the guerrilla being considered a sideshow, little more than bandits. In Spain, the guerrilla resistance has been portrayed as a nationwide, patriotic movement.Recent historical researches focus on the reality of guerilla war: its social origins and geography; its real impact and consequence. Guerrilla warfare was not a unanimous, national effort. Although small parties of guerrilla operated throughout Spain, the greatest of the insurgent armies operated in northern Spain. The guerrillas continued to sever communications, cut up small detachments, ambush conveys, pick off sentries, and intercept couriers and messengers. Sometimes, they waged the war against the French alongside with the regular armies of Wellington. In short, French authorities remained in a constant state of flux, with every region unsafe to the occupier.
In military terms, most vital contribution of the guerrillas resides in the fact that they have prevented the French either from crushing the remaining Spanish field armies or from concentrating all their forces against Wellington`s army. Always superior in total military strength, the Napoleonic army remains inferior to Wellington`s in the major battle fields. The guerrillas would have accounted for 150,000 French losses, just one half of the hypothetical French losses during the war. The guerrilla war, therefore, constituted Napoleon`s `final knot`, as he called the Spanish debacle.
